aged
When the growth in the elderly population began, they also brought up higher health care costs. 33% of prison population continues to rise, while 16% percent of those serving life sentences will be elderly.
For states, the challenges associated with an aging prisoner
population are growing, because of this some states have established rules that apply to elderly
prisoners. For instance, while Ohio de nes elderly inmates as
those aged 50 and older, Minnesota sets the age at 55. Michigan
considers those 60 and above as elderly, while in Colorado, this
designation is reserved for inmates 65 and older. Other states have
no ofcial age designation for the elderly prisoner population.
